Thumbs Up Riding School was started in South Florida in 2006, and has been at this location since 2011. Owner/Instructor Kami Landy says about her work;
“I teach balanced seat riding, which is an English form, the root of
dressage and eventing, but applicable to most riding goals. My focus is
on developing solid foundations: control, communication, confidence,
relaxation. I like to teach private lessons, especially to beginners, so
that they can learn correct body mechanics from the beginning. Sometimes
we do exercises on the ground to help build particular skills. Once
a student is safe and fairly independent, if I have another student with
similar schedule an learning needs, I’ll put them together– that lets me
teach with other games and exercises. We have fun with mounted drill and pairs’ work.
My background is elementary education, and I find that I use an awareness of developmental psychology and pedagogical principles in structuring lessons. That said, I really enjoy working with adult beginners and returning adults- it’s fun to be able to talk to the intellect as well a the body, and apply aspects of the student’s previous life experience to the process of learning to ride.
Long term goals include offering such clinics as yoga or Feldenkreis ™ movement for equestrians, Centered Riding(tm)/driving, TTouch ™, sports psychology, etc.”
Kami owns the FEI Combined Driving Horse, M.V.A. Famtijn. He is driven by Marianna Yeager of Yeager Equine Services in USEF and FEI competitions. They recently competed at the 2024 World Championships in France. Kami is most happy developing her horse farm into a First Class venue for horse and equestrians alike.
Joining Kami at Thumbs up as a teacher and Equinox Equestrian Center as Director of Development is world renowned judge and trainer Gareth Archer Selwood.
Gareth is a USEF R judge who brings a lifetime of knowledge to the table. Gareth has judged in Holland, Belgium, Australia and the USA. He has been a panelist and instructor with USEF since 2000. Gareth is not only a well respected judge but trainer as well. Garnering many International and National titles over his lifetime career in the equine industry. One of the things we find most valuable is Gareth’s diverse breed experience. To name just a few including Arabians, Andalusians, Friesians, gated breeds and even mustangs. Gareth is a valued asset to the equine community and we are honored to have him with us.
